On a quick trip around Sunrise Valley Park in Reston on Saturday, 26 March,
about 0930, we saw an American Bittern in the brush on the north side of the
pond. (We failed to see it on a return trip on 27 March, though Jay and Carol
Hadlock did see it flying over the pond on the 27th.) Also present on Saturday
were a pair of Hooded Mergansers and the following expected residents:
Great Blue Heron (1)
Canada Geese (12+)
Mallards (4)
Red-Shouldered Hawk (1)
Killdeer (1)
Mourning Doves
Northern Flickers (3)
Eastern Phoebes (3)
American Crows
American Robins (many)
Yellow-Rumped Warbler (1)
Song Sparrows (many, singing)
Northern Cardinals
Red-Winged Blackbirds (many, singing)
House Finches (3)
House Sparrows
