Hello, birders.
I forgot to post this a couple of weeks ago when I
first found out about it. The sightings log at Mason
Neck SP shows that 3 American White Pelicans have been
seen in Belmont Bay since about May 16. I talked to
one of the park staff today, May 31, and he has been
seeing them as well as some visitors to the park. I
haven't seen anything about these birds on the
listserv.
These birds have been seen way out from the Visitor's
Center, near the islands across the bay towards
Occoquan. The staff member told me that someone saw
one or more pelicans this morning but I didn't see
them myself, despite scanning for them for a while.
It was fun to bird the park today. I birded the
Visitor's Center area, incl. the short Beach Trail, as
well as the Bayshore Trail. One Blackburnian Warbler
was singing near the beginning of the Beach Trail. It
was the only migrant that I noted. I got great looks
at a pair of Yellow-throated Warblers in between the
Visitor's Center and the canoe launch. One more was
present on the rise behind the swamp. Other warblers
incl. 3 Prothonotories. I spotted 2 adult Bald Eagles
and 3 immatures. Carolina Chickadees were feeding
their young, which look about as big as the adults.
Bullfrogs were abundant at the pond next to the canoe
launch area. Mammals included a Woodchuck near this
pond and 2 Muskrats in it.
