VA BIRDers,
I was scouting for birds for this Sunday's upcoming Fort Bevoir CBC (as well
as good para-sailing sites - great drafts at Lorton today by the way) and
came across a group of 21 Am. Pipits that sat down in the grass near the Nike
historical marker on Hoos Rd. A few Red-tails and Am. Kestrels coursed the
area near the co-generation plant.
For those of you looking to try out that new scope or binocular (or just to
work off some of that "holiday cheer") there are many areas of the Fort
Belvoir CBC that need good coverage. Some imporant areas needing a few
volunteers are the Fort Belvoir/Accotink Refuge, Occoquan Bay NWR and
Leeslyvania SP, Gunston Hall, and the Burke Lake areas. All locations have
river or lake access (and no freeze up this year!) making for great
waterfowling opportunities. For the gull afficienados, the Neabsco Cr region
is an afternoon staging area for gulls before going to roost - maybe the
California Gull will stop by again! If you're interested, send me a message
and we will try to match you with your preference.
Wishing Everyone Good Holiday Birds!
Kurt Gaskill
