In scouting the Big Levels and Lake Sherando areas for this Saturday's
Augusta Bird Club field trip I tallied up a moderate list of birds including
some seasonal firsts for ME (with *). Highlights are listed:
* Broad-winged Hawk -- several soaring birds on 4/19
Red-shouldered Hawk -- 1 on 4/19
* American Bittern -- flushed 2 from edge of wooded swamp this morning
Wood Duck -- several pair in same swamp, often seen perched on snags and
limbs
Belted Kingfisher
Red-headed Woodpecker -- on 4/19 I counted at least 4 and suspect 5 or 6;
breeding activity included drumming and chasing. This morning I had an
adult Red-headed and male Wood Duck in the same snag. Quite a sight.
I hoped to hit the woodpecker cycle by getting all 7, but dipped on
sapsucker.
Blue-headed Vireo -- these have been here almost two weeks.
* Yellow-throated Vireo -- 4/19
* White-eyed Vireo -- 4/20 (Nelson Co.); this morning at Big Levels
* Red-eyed Vireo -- 4/20 (Nelson Co.)
* Great-crested Flycatcher -- this morning
Ruby-crowned Kinglets were singing away both days.
Blue-gray Gnatcatchers -- plentiful.
Hermit Thrush -- this morning
* Scarlet Tanager -- this morning
Warblers
Louisiana Waterthrush -- 4/19 & this morning
* Ovenbird -- 4/19 & this morning
Pine Warbler -- 4/19 & this morning
Yellow-rumped Warbler -- this morning
* Black and White Warbler -- 4/19 & this morning
* Black-throated Greed -- 4/19 & this morning
* Yellow Warbler -- this morning
* Hooded Warbler -- this morning
Driving home through the Stuarts Draft area I stopped at a few ponds and
brushy areas where the following were added:
Lesser & Greater Yellowlegs
Killdeer
Catbird
Brown Thrasher
Sparrows: Song, Savannah, Field, Chipping, Vesper, White-crowned,
White-throated
We should get most of the above on Saturday's trip (the bitterns may have
left) plus a few more warblers such as redstart, Worm-eating, plus who knows
what else. Contact me if you are interested in coming along.
