Today I made the long 4 hr. drive to the Whitetop Mnt.
area in Grayson Co. to add ALDER FLYCATCHER (#286) to m
my VA Big Year List. I had two birds singing at the beaver
ponds along Rt. 755 1/2 mile NE of Whitetop Station. At the
summit of Whitetop, I got most of the expected high altitude
breeders including: 15 RED CROSSBILL(which put on quite a show
calling and flying from spruce top to spruce top and feeding
on the cones),YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLER(2),WINTER WREN(3),
GOLDEN-CROWNED KINGLET (2),BROWN CREEPER (1),RED-BREASTED
NUTHATCH(2),HERMIT THRUSH(1),PURPLE FINCH(2),YELLOW-BELLIED
SAPSUCKER(1),MAGNOLIA WARBLER(6),as well as VEERY, RAVEN,
CANADA WARBLER , BLACK-CAPPED CHICKADEE, and juncos.
Good Birding,
Mike Boatwright--
