Yesterday morning at 6:45 AM while walking the dog I heard an Alder
Flycatcher singing its "Fee Bee Ohh" at the edge of a parking lot at
Fort Hill Shopping Center in Lynchburg. It was on a steep bank with a
shrubby growth of tree of heaven, wild black cherry, box elder, etc.
When I walked over closer to investigate, the bird was no longer
singing, nor visible. I returned about half an hour later and relocated
the bird, getting a brief look as it was flycatching at the edge of the
parking lot, and heard a few abbreviated songs, as well as calls.
Rexanne Bruno, Mark Johnson, and Robert Ferrell arrived by around 9 AM
and also got looks at the bird flycatching and perched, although it did
not vocalize then. It was lost from view, and not relocated again that
morning or late that afternoon, nor this morning from 6:20-7:30 AM.
This is the second spring record for Lynchburg, and there is also a
spring Amherst County record. There was also a singing Palm Warbler in
the same area both yesterday morning and still this morning.
