Virginia birders,
I spent this morning (28 April) and the first hour of
the afternoon doing some spring birding around
Albemarle County.
At Observatory Hill (O Hill), I enjoyed a couple hours
birding with Teresa Shaner and Leigh Surdukowski. Our
highlights included: NASHVILLE WARBLER (singing &
seen), several BLACK-THROATED GREEN WARBLER, a singing
NORTHERN PARULA, 30+ YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLERS, a BLACK &
WHITE WARBLER, BLACK-THROATED BLUE WARBLER (seen just
before my arrival by Teresa and Leigh), SCARLET
TANAGER (female), ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAK (female),
YELLOW-BILLED CUCKOO (heard), a GREAT CRESTED
FLYCATCHER, 2 YELLOW-THROATED VIREO, 1 BLUE-HEADED
VIREO, several RED-EYED VIREO, several singing WOOD
THRUSH, and 3 male BALTIMORE ORIOLES (traveling
together).
I made my inaugural visit from to the King Family
Vineyards in western Albemarle, recently mentioned in
a post by Jenny Gaden. Though there were no ducks, the
number of shorebirds at the ponds and mudflats just
inside the entry gate was impressive: 43 SOLITARY
SANDPIPER (amazing), 8 SPOTTED SANDPIPER, 5 GREATER
YELLOWLEGS, 7 LESSER YELLOWLEGS, 2 LEAST SANDPIPER, 2
WILSON'S SNIPE, and 2 KILLDEER. There were 50+
swallows, including BARN, NORTHERN ROUGH-WINGED, and
TREE; and 6 RUSTY BLACKBIRD.
My last stop was the pond just outside the entrance to
the Old Trail golf course (also western Albemarle,
just off Rt 250). In addition to the usual suspects, I
had an OSPREY, 2 YELLOW WARBLERS, a SPOTTED SANDPIPER,
2 ORCHARD ORIOLES, and 2 GRAY CATBIRDS.
An excellent day.
