VA BIRDers,
After resting up from scouting and doing the Kiptopeke Challenge last weekend
with teammate Marc Ribaudo, let me provide a summary of the birds we found
between 9/19-21 in the two Delmarva Virginia counties; this information is an
addition to Ned's previous post.
As most of you may know, the winds were light and southerly across the
Kiptopeke peninsula with some humid flow from about 9/18 to just recently and
few migrants traversed the area. Teams participating in the Kiptopeke
Challenge were particularly challenged by these conditions. The results
below are only those from the Wandering Siskins; The CVWO website will be
updated with the overall results in the near future. Please note that the
conditions this weekend appear much more favorable for migrants!
Highlights we observed were 2 Great Cormorants at CBBT #3, Green Herons at
ESNWR near ramp road, White Ibis at ESNWR, Glossy Ibis at Chincoteague NWR,
Wood Ducks, Virginia Rails and Sora in the Saxis area, Marbled Godwits at
Oyster, Red Knots at Chincoteague (described previously), Buff-breasted
Sandpiper (ditto), Common Nighthawk, Acadian Flycatcher, Warbling Vireo (the
Pony Trail at Chincoteague), large numbers of Tree Swallows, Marsh Wren at
ESNWR, flying Veery at Magotha Rd, YB Chat at ESNWR, Savannah Sparrows in
several locations, Seaside Sparrows at ESNWR, Bobolink in several locations,
and E. Meadowlark at Chincoteague.
Preliminary reports by other teams doing the KC also revealed the following
species not previously recorded on past KC's: E. Collared Dove, Barred Owl at
Chincoteague Pony Trail, Olive-sided Flycatcher and Hooded Warbler.
For the information below, species in parenthesis were those found during
scouting on 9/19 and 20 but not recorded by the Wandering Siskins on 9/21.
Numbers are from 9/21 unless in parenthesis.
