[va-bird] A sizable "quarrel of (Fox) sparrows" at Occoquan Bay NWR, Prince William Co.

VA-Birders,

Sharon Lynn, Tom Albright, Bill Young, and I not-so-patiently awaited the lifting of the thick fog at Occoquan Bay NWR this morning. The fog finally lifted and the birds came out, notably the largest number of FOX SPARROWS that any of us had seen in some time. We felt there were probably 12 of them along Bayview and Charlie Roads. They were singing, perching, foraging on the road and in meadow grasses, generally popping up all over in that part of the refuge.

A HOUSE WREN was scolding in the field adjacent to the parking lot. We saw a SHARP-SHINNED HAWK perched along the road to the parking lot, and 6 WINTER WRENS, 2 RUBY-CROWNED KINGLETS, a YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER, and most of the other regulars at the refuge in winter. Competing with Fox Sparrows for the "best vocalizing on a foggy day in late November" prize were spring peepers.
