Hello VAbirders,
I was working in the garden a few hours today, surrounded by bird sounds so
sweet, and I noticed a new sound....or was it? It was high pitched and
seemed familiar somehow.
I thought a flock of Waxwings must be in the trees above me, so kept
looking for them, but never saw any.
Then I thought, Starlings?
No, not Darlings.
Some very late Blackpoll warblers?
No, that's crazy, not Blackpolls.
I was beginning to think I'd gone batty when I finally found the birdees
making the sounds.....
baby Red-bellied Woodpeckers...and quite a few...3? 4?
Geewhiz, what a surprise! Such a small, high pitched sound for such a
good-sized bird! I assume I was hearing their begging sounds.
It's nice having so many babies around to liven up the garden after feeling
somewhat letdown with the passing of spring migration.
