A changing composition of yard and feeder visitors has resulted in
stepped up surveillance at my feeders.  Over the past week 3 fox sparrow
have been daily visitors.  They are in addition to our regular winter
residents of field sparrows, song sparrow, white throats, juncos, and
eastern towhees (2 pairs have been with us all winter). Red-winged
blackbirds and brown-headed cowbirds have been putting in appearances as
well.  A pair of bluebirds has been scoping out the box in our yard, and
I believe carolina chickadees have claimed another box.  About a week
and a half ago two woodcock were displaying over our house for a couple
of days.  I have not heard any recently, so they were probably just
passing through.  This morning a robin was singing lustily at 5:15am,
the first time I have heard their song in a while.

One of my carpool companions has had a red-headed woodpecker coming to
her feeder all winter in Montclair (Dumfries, VA).  It started the
winter off as an immature, but is now sporting an almost-red head.
