Early this afternoon I had a new yardbird and a Lifer at the same time: a
CONNECTICUT WARBLER! It first landed on my deck rail and then flew into the
undergrowth near the deck. Both Karen and I got great views of it during the
time it was around.
Yesterday morning, close to my home, I had an experience I have not had for
years. About 7:00 am while walking on Ebenezer Church Road (Rt 779) in western
Loudoun Co. (not far from Bluemont) I flushed a covey of approx. 20 Northern
Bobwhite. I have not seen this many quail since the late '80's & those were on
the Manassas Battlefield. While I have heard Bobwhites several times & seen
them a few times earlier in the summer on Ebenezer (even got a couple of decent
photos) this was an astounding and wonderful experience!
While I haven't gotten in as much birding lately because of the proposed
Courtland Farms Rural Village next door to the Banshee Reeks Nature preserve
(at Wednesday night's Planning Commission Public Hearing on the proposed Rural
Village 19 people spoke about the damage this subdivision would do to the
wonderful habitat in the central part of Lo Co) these kinds of sightings make
it all worthwhile.
