It was a very quiet morning birdwise. I started at Leesylvania before dawn, and
near the fishing pier I saw an imm. Bald Eagle carrying a decent size fish it
had just caught. Only three warbler spp. here, all of them up on the
promontory. One was a YELLOW WARBLER (I think a 1st yr. female). Yes, I know
they should be well south of here by now; tell the bird that. This bird was all
bright yellow, including the underside of the tail, with some pink-yellow
showing on the bill. The back was only a shade or two darker than the belly
with a greenish tinge; no facial markings; and the underside of the tail
feathers was only a shade darker than the undertail coverts, with a darker
yellow outer edging on the outer tail feathers. Only birds of note at OBNWR was
three Ruby-crowned Kinglets. Complete list follows
On a sad note, Cockpit Road's days as a birding venue may be numbered. There
are signs up along the left side from the radio tower road down to the asphalt
station announcing a hearing on development of what looks like all of the
undeveloped land on the peninsula south of the Dominion Power property and
between Cockpit and Possum Point Rds. It does not look like the right side of
Cockpit Rd. is involved. The hearing is Oct. 4 at 7PM in the James J. McCort
