I haven't heard anyone mention Observation Hill this fall and thought I
would see what was crusing by up there this morning as it was the first clear
morning after the rain and cold front. I got there at 6:45. The sun wasn't up
yet and it was pretty quiet. I was fearing a quiet morning. A pileated
woodpecker flew by and about 6 warblers- unidentified. Plus a breeze was
picking up.
Then it started. By the time the sun had been up 15 min., there were birds
everywhere. Warblers were very active with a total of 12 species seen including
a
beautiful pr. of Blackburnian warblers, a bright pr. of Cape May warblers and a
lone Blackpoll. High numbers went to Redstarts and Chestnut-sided warblers.
There were also lots of Red-eyed Vireos. There were 3 different flycatchers,
only one singing, repeatedly, at the end of the rush telling me it was an
Acadian. Plus an Eastern Wood Pewee. About mid-way through the active period, a
Red-headed Woodpecker flew overhead out of the east straight into the west
about
25ft up and not looking left or right. It was an adult and on a mission. I
would guess I got a look at about 30% of the birds moving by. Most all the
trees
had something going on in them. It was an excellent and easy probably 2 hrs of
birding and I plan to do it tomorrow morning as well. Here's an unorganized
