I was at the NY Monuments this morning at 7:15 thinking I need to quit
coming out so early because it was just me and a few bats. Being lightly
overcast
and a damp cold temp, the early morning flush was delayed. Eventually a
Red-tailed hawk flew in and landed in one of the trees. Then an oddball
solitary
male pintail flew directly overhead at about 25'. A little later an oddball
group
of 9 Double-crested Comorants flew over. About 8:00 it started to hop.
Probably a total of 70-80 Yellow-rump warblers showed themselves with NO other
warblers mixed in. But my main intention for the day was to focus lower to the
ground. I walked slowly through the area beyond the parking to the tall pines
and
back several times and lots of birds-mainly sparrows were moving. I saw Swamp
sparrows8, Field sparrows10, Song sparrows9, Lincoln sparrows3(one singing),
White-throated sparrows14, White-crownwd sparrow1( adult), and my first Fox
sparrow(adult) of the year in bright plumage. There were 3 yellow palm warblers
including one very bright yellow with a bright rusty cap and a vagrant oddball
worm-eating warbler, lots of ruby and golden crown kinglets, not a single
towhee. Wait thats only 7 sparrows. I left there and saw a female American
kestral
on the wires before hwy234 on my way to the Law Enforcement area where I
found the three Vesper sparrows again along with 3 Palm warblers by the pond
and
six Savanna sparrows in the field edge across from the pond. Many thanks to
Laura Catterton for telling me about this place as its been quite productive,
although different, 3 weekends in a row.
