After striking out on the previously reported Eurasian Collared-Dove in
Isle of Wight Co. yesterday at around 2 PM, I made my way back there
today at around 5:30 PM. I was quite surprised to see 5 EURASIAN
COLLARED-DOVES sitting on the wires this evening. There were 4 together
on Longview Dr. near the intersection with Oliver Dr. and 1 on Woodland
Dr. near the intersection with Longview. Prior to looking for the
doves, I visited Hog Island WMA in Surry Co.. I walked into the field
opposite the last observation tower towards the water and was rewarded
with a nice variety of shorebirds and terns. Best birds were 3
BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPERS feeding in the grassy area near the water.
Also along the water in the mud I had a number of shorebirds that
included WESTERN SANDPIPER, WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPER, STILT SANDPIPER,
SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHER, GREATER AND LESSER YELLOWLEGS, SEMI-PALMATED AND
LEAST SANDPIPER and SEMI-PALMATED PLOVER. There were many CASPIAN TERNS
present and at least 12 LEAST TERNS. There were also a number of
FORSTER'S TERNS. Good birding.
