I stayed close to home today but nevertheless had a fun day birding. In
Waverly Park, off Old Courthouse Road, Vienna, I found a pair of Barred Owls
in a stand of pine trees. It looked like a pair, one bird larger than the
other, although I would have thought she would be sitting on eggs by now.
Other notables included RC Kinglet, Hermit Thrush, singing Brown Thrashers
(2), Field, Song, White-throated, and lots of Chipping sparrows. A flock of
DC Cormorants flew over in a V shape.
The most spectacular bird of the day was a male Palm Warbler. He was feeding
in a field with a group of Chipping Sparrows, and did not seem shy at all.
He would fly from a tree in the fence-line down into the field and forage on
the ground, giving great looks. What a beauty! Then when I got home from
monitoring my Bluebird trail there was Pine Warbler on the feeder!
(BTW, lots of CAWR in my neck of the woods.)
