Tom & I got a late start birding today(10am) but went out to Stumpy Lake in
Virginia Beach anyway. The first bird we heard singing on the drive into
Stumpy was a Prothonotary Warbler. We heard them over and over and
over...well you get the picture. Yes we were able to see the little beauties!
We heard what I am fairly certain were 4 different Prothons singing from the
entrance to just past the water where you turn left by the driving range. We
usually hear see them around the club house...but not this morning. We didn't
see alot of Warbler variety today. Stumpy used to have greater variety in
years past....but...I still enjoy it in the spring. A White Eyed Vireo sang
near the driving range. We were able to get good looks and great digital
pictures of a Pileated in 2 different places. I love it when they cooperate
so nicely! The trees were alive with Great Crested Flycatchers and we saw one
Eastern Kingbird singing sweetly. There were about 4 Spotted Sandpipers
present and a mature Bald Eagle did a nice flyby. The BG Gnatcatchers were
still very vocal and easily pishable.
Monday we plan to bird the Botanical Gardens in Norfolk....any locals reading
this been recently? If so please e-mail me the hot spots. I have not been out
in several years.
