A birding day that began on Harrison Rd. near Marshall, then northward on
I-66/Rte 17 to Sky Meadows State Park, then west on Rte 50 to Blandy's State
Arboretum, and finally south on Rte 710 toward Rectortown produced impressive
numbers of Bald Eagles, Turkeys, Red-tailed Hawks, and Kestrels.
We tallied 18 Bald Eagles taking reasonable care to avoid duplication. They
were seen throughout our route, with some concentration in the Sky Meadows
area. We also saw a like number of Red-tailed Hawks, about 12 Kestrels, and a
sole Harrier. A Short-eared Owl was spotted in a field along Rte 710 near Rte
623 South.
Thirteen Wild Turkey were in a field east of Rte 17 at its intersection with
Rte 710, and one additional bird was observed in a wooded area along Rte 710.
Sky Meadows produced the expected Red-headed Woodpeckers, but we also
observed two additional birds at the intersection of Rtes 710 and 712. The
sparrow
field at Sky Meadow was disappointing yielding only Song and Swamp Sparrows in
small numbers, but one of our party picked out a Chipping Sparrow in a small
flock of Juncos near the main park entrance. Blandy provided more variety
including White-crowned, White-throated, Swamp, and Song.
A Red-breasted Nuthatch is still present at the feeders at Blandy.
