I just got a call from Katie and Bill James to tell me about 13 AMERICAN
WHITE PELICANS that they observed at Carvins Cove Reservoir this evening. The
birds stayed in view for approx. 30 minutes circling the lake at various
heights, mostly high, but once came down low enough for all field marks to be
observed. Said they appeared confused at times, apparently trying to decide
whether
or not to land. Once they observed a few of them, while flying in a V, "crash
" into each other when they made a turn. They're not sure if they finally
landed as security personnel made everyone leave at 6:30. We had been doing a
hawkwatch there most of the day and unfortunately, I left at 5. The pelicans
showed up at 6.........SIGH!!!! We recorded moderate SW winds most of
the day.
