Sorry for the late post.
I was around Eastern Shore NWR and the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel (CBBT)
this past Saturday. I went to see how the seabird watch at Smith Island is
done. It was an enjoyable day that began by hearing a Great Horned Owl and
seeing Woodcock at the NWR. Then I was told that everyone was going over to
Ned Brinkley's house to see the banding of the hummingbird that has been
there. It was nice to see the bird (found to be a female Ruby-throat) being
banded. Afterward, we went out to Smith Island for the seabird watch. I
really enjoyed the experience of seeing the birds and meeting everyone,
despite the climb to the lighthouse top. The view from the lighthouse was
alone worth the trip. One of the watchers, Liz, hurt her foot, but,
thankfully, it did not appear serious. I hope she is feeling better.
I spent the last daylight hours searching the CBBT for eiders. The male and
female Harlequin Ducks were present with a big flock of scoters on the bay
side of Island 4. The other islands each had a small flock of scoters, but
I did not find any Oldsquaw or eiders. The gulls were coming in for the
night, but I did not see anything unusual. Purple Sandpipers and Ruddy
Turnstones were around.
