While visiting my in-laws for the New Year, I found a couple of hours to
enjoy the spring-like weather at Claytor Lake State Park in Pulaski County,
VA. A nice assortment of waterfowl were located along with the usual winter
land-birds.
Waterfowl included:
2 Common Loon
2 Horned Grebe
3 Pied-billed Grebe
12 Bufflehead
10 Canada Geese
2 Mallards
2 Kingfisher (waterfowl by association)
Also observed were an estimated 1500 Ring-Billed Gulls flying in to roost on
the lake for the night. These birds were present all 3 nights I spent in
the area.I'd imagine that some of the local birders will confirm that
they're a regular winter visitor. Alas, no scope to search the flock for
rarities.
