I birded the Route 1 corridor in Prince William County this morning and
early afternoon and saw 84 species, including 10 warblers. I started at
Possum Point Road in Dumfries, and then made stops at Cockpit Point Rd.,
Leesylvania State Park, Occoquan NWR (which I birded with Kurt Gaskill),
and Metz Wetlands-Neabsco Creek. Highlights were the warblers (black
and white, northern parula, prairie, pine, palm, yellow-throated,
yellow-rumped, yellowthroat, ovenbird, and Louisiana waterthrush),
white-eyed vireo, eastern kingbird (Occoquan NWR), a nice flock of mixed
ducks (ruddy, lesser scaup, canvasback, and bufflehead) at Occoquan NWR,
red-breasted merganser (Occoquan NWR), pied-billed grebe (along Possum
Point Rd.), turkey (Possum Pt. Rd.) and Forster's tern (Occoquan NWR).
Nine warbler species were along Cockpit Point Rd. Yellow-throated
warblers were particularly abundant.
