After enjoying a (comparatively) balmy morning at Bellehaven and seeing most
of the ducks Kurt and others previously described -- including a single
canvasback, many common mergansers, black ducks, American coots, green-winged
teal and bufflehead, we stopped at Roach's Run, abreast of National Airport.
We added a number of hooded mergansers, pied-billed grebes, and a
considerable population of great blue herons in and under the trees across
the water. But the best surprises were an adult bald eagle and six
blackcrowned night herons (two juvenile, four adult).
