WELCOME TO THE USS TEMPEST
Deep, in the darkest backwaters of uncharted space flies the USS Tempest, an
Akira class cruiser. Her captain, an exiled idealist, hand-picked her crew,
damning them to a life of solitude. Separated from friends and loved ones for
years, they chart the Gamma Quadrant. Omnipotent beings, advanced
civilizations, war and peace, fortune and strife... some crews never find time
to be bored.

So, on behalf of the Celestial Prime Alliance, Captain Lindsey Craig and
Commander Christian DeAngelo would like to welcome you aboard this Akira Class
Star Ship. In the event of an emergency, the escape pods are located on all
decks below Deck 3, please note that there are no (repeat NO) escape pods on
Decks 1 and 2. There are 100 lifeboats aboard, each carrying 8 people and can
support each occupant for a minimum of 6 months (longer if we hook a load of
'em up together). Should decompression occur, forcefields will activate to
prevent further loss of atmosphere. We hope you enjoy your time with the USS
Tempest and if you have any further questions, please feel free to email either
of us.

The Ship

The USS Tempest is an Akira Class Fighter Carrier. This class entered service
in 2364 to replace Excelsior, Ambassador and New Orleans class starships as the
forefront ship of deepspace defence of the Federation.

It has 18 decks in total, only 17 of which are habitable. It is 464.43 metres
long, 316.67 metres wide and 87.43 metres tall, so we're only little. But we do
pack a hell of a punch. The Tempest is fitted with the Type X array system,
with two dorsel phaser arrays on the primary hull. She also carries quantum
torpedos, launched from three sites: one just above the main deflector dish,
one at the bow of the primary hull and the final one within the main sail.

Her Departments

The Bridge and Ships Operations

The Main Bridge is located on Deck 1 along with the Captain's Ready Room, the
Briefing Room and the Observation Lounge. The Bridge supervises all main
mission operations and is the control centre for all departmental activities.

As a Ships Operations person you are responsible for the general, day-to-day
running of the ship. You are also the Communications Officer and, most likely,
the Helmsman.

Tactical and Security

The Chiefs of Tactical and Security on the USS Tempest are one in the same. His
office is on Deck 15 along with one of the armories. Under his command are both
Tactical and Security officers.

As a Tactical officer, you are responsible for the external safety of the ship.
It is your job to defend her using her own weapon arrays. You will also liaise
with Flight Operations officers to combine attack and defense strategies with
the fighters.

As a Security officer, you are responsible for the internal safety of the ship.
You are our policemen, our marines and our last line of defense. In the
unwelcome event that you will need it, the Brig is located on Deck 17.

Science

There are three science labs on the Tempest. The Primary Lab is on Deck 4, the
Secondary is on Deck 5 and the Tertiary is on Deck 6. You will find the Chief
of Science's office on Deck 14 with Stellar Cartography (and if you can work
out why it's not with the Science Labs then you get a prize!).

Science is great! You are the guys who get to have all the fun. Biology,
physics, chemistry, astronomy. You name it, they do it. In fact, you're the
ones that are going to have the most to do as we explore. Just imagine all the
things you get to research and experiment on whenever we find a new species!

Medical and the Counsellor

The whole of Medical is contained on Deck 4, where you will find Sick Bay, the
CMO's office and the Counsellor's office. Nice and easy!

As CMO or an AMO, you're the doctors. Keep us well or patch us up, we look to
you to make sure that none of us die from something virulent and nasty. Again,
you'll have your work cut out for you in the Gamma Quadrant, because I'm sure
we'll come across whole new strains of as yet unheard of diseases that you'll
have lots of fun finding a cure for.

If, on the other hand, you're one of the ship's counsellors then you have the
joy of taking care of our mental health. Nutcases and lunatics or just plain
old psychoses, you'll have fun untangling our internal worlds.

Engineering

Main Engineering is located on Deck 15 along with (wouldn't you guess it?) the
Chief Engineer's office/station. Further Engineering controls are scattered
across Decks 14 to 18.

As an Engineer, you do for the Tempest what the doctors do for her crew. You
keep her flying, maintain her and patch her up when her nutty Captain decides
to have some unknown alien race blow a hole in her side. You are essential to
our very existence, because without the ship, well one can only hold a lungful
of air for 30 seconds before one asphyxiates in open space.

Flight Operations

A newly expanded if not completely new department! Flight Operations take care
of the Fighters and Shuttlecraft. Most of the systems are located on Decks A-D,
you even have your own bridge: TIC (Tactical Information Centre) located on
Deck A.

Pilots and navigators and tacticians galore! As a Fighter Pilot, you're our
first line of defense. You take out our Kaneda Class Fighters and buzz around
the enemy, too fast for their own phasers to pick you off. Each fighter carries
two personnel: pilot and navigator. The navigator is also a makeshift engineer.
No one knows the small craft's systems like him/her. In the background are the
Flight Operations officers. You're the tacticians, you direct the fighters to
where they need to be to defend us properly. Without you, the fighters would be
blind and we would have to rely on only our ship-board defenses.

Crews Quarters and Recreation

Ha! Thought I'd forgotten, hadn't you? Quarters are scattered about the ship,
I'm afraid. Senior and junior officers' living quarters are located on Decks C
and D for Flight Ops, and then Decks 2-5 for all other personnel. Enlisted crew
quarters are located on Deck 15 for Flight Ops and Deck 14 for everyone else.
Finally, Visiting Officers and NCO quarters are on Deck 3.

We have a set of holosuites (Deck 2) and holodecks (Deck 3), plus the Main
Lounge (for that long awaited drink) is on Deck 5.

All-in-all, we're a well rounded ship and I hope that you'll fit right in to
whichever department you've chosen to join.

Rules and Guidelines

Now onto the nitty-gritty of the sim. We are a CPA simulation, thus we keep to
their rules. But let me emphasise a few of the more important points:

1. Enjoy yourself. Remember, above all, that this is a game and meant to be
enjoyable.

2. Respect the other players. If you need one of their characters in one of
your logs then talk to them about it. Even if all you're doing is mentioning
that they're there, it's just courteous to check you've got it right.

3. Keep conflicts off the mailstring. In the unlikely event that a conflict
does occur between yourself and another player, please don't post to everyone
about it. Keep it to yourselves. If there is no way to resolve it just between
the two of you then contact one of the hosts directly.

4. No moding. By this we mean, no reacting to things that your character should
have no knowledge of. Out of character knowledge is one thing, but no
incorporating it into your logs.

5. No munchkins. No character should be all powerful, we all have flaws after
all. If the Tempest were crewed by infallible people then we'd never have any
fun trying to get out of our screw-ups ;-)

And Most Importantly...

Have fun!

Remember that it's just a game, we're here to play and enjoy it. If at any time
it stops being fun then let us know and we'll do everything we can to either
bring you back into the thick of things or (if you really feel that you can no
longer stay with us) ease you out with the least fuss.

It's gonna be real fun getting to know you! Welcome aboard,

Captain Lindsey Craig and Commander Christian DeAngelo
