"Procrastination"
by Mara Ryell
She could feel a sharp pain in her arm as the Nausicaan slammed her into the
bulkhead. He noticed her wince and his face contorted into an expression of
pleasure as he twisted her arm and threw her across the bridge. Gasping for
air, she shook her hair out of her face and saw him charging towards her. A
quick glance told her that everyone else was occupied with their own struggles.
She backed up towards her station and felt her hand touch something. The
Nausicaan was almost upon her now and he lunged towards her angrily.
A red beam of phaser fire shot out, striking him directly in the chest. She
tried to roll out of the way but his stunned body fell with a dead weight onto
her, knocking her phaser out of reach once more.
Mara struggled to move out from under him, barely able to breathe. A few more
phaser beams struck out and then someone was helping her to her feet. The rest
of the Nausicaans had been subdued. Mara hobbled over to her station, rearming
the torpedoes. If she didn't take out their warp engines now, theyâd get
away. Just like that damn silver ship. She slammed her fist onto the console
just as another Nausicaan shimmered onto the bridge in front of her. Without
checking to see if the torpedoes had found their mark, she leapt at him hoping
her momentum would knock him off her feet.
It felt like slamming into a bulkhead. Again.
"Simulation paused. Continue, save parameters, or exit?"
Mara lay on the floor, breathing heavily. She had forgotten about setting a
timer on the program.
She didn't want to go back out there. She didn't want to finish her report,
detailing the shots she had missed. She didn't want to think about the officer
that had died down on the planet.
Using her good arm, Mara slowly pulled herself up.
"Exit."
