"Verbal Dance"
Dr. N'Ellie Coyne and Special Agent Autumn Frost

Heartburn, N’Ellie groaned as she ordered a glass of milk from her office’s replacator. Now it was heartburn, well at least she wasn’t randomly passing out anymore. This not knowing which species’ pregnancy symptoms she was going to wake up to each morning was getting annoying as hell. At least Aidoaneth had finally been able to determine she’d have a Betazoid gestation of ten months. Easing back into her chair she picked up a padd and began to look it over. With Anna on maternity leave, and her own pending maternity leave that was going to leave them short staffed. There would also be a small overlap, which meant both heads of the department would be out. Picking up the padd she took notes on she wrote a reminder to herself to speak with Aidoaneth about that.

“Doctor N’Ellie Coyne?”

N’Ellie looked up as she replied, “Yes,” to the unknown voice. When she saw the woman standing in her office doorway she blinked. Aww crap, she thought as the woman approached her desk.

“Special Agent Autumn Frost.” Autumn introduced herself. “Star Fleet…”

“Special Forces, yeah, I got that.” The Klingon hybrid cut in. “What do you want?”

Autumn showed no outward signs, but she was taken aback at the young woman’s bluntness. Then again she was a Klingon. “I have some questions I’d like to ask you.”

“So ask.” N’Ellie said as she looked up at the woman. She was actually very pretty, her hair was a long soft brown and her eyes an icy blue. Didn’t make her amyls a barracuda though.

If the doctor was going to be blunt so was she. “What was your relationship to Daniel Murgo, also known as Joshua Garrity?”

She’d sensed it as soon as the woman appeared, the unique tingle of foreign telepathy. Now that she knew why the woman was here, N’Ellie was glad she’d thrown up her strongest shields as soon as she’d sensed it. She didn’t trust Human telepaths. “We were friends.”

“I’ve heard you were more.” Autumn replied as she came even closer to the desk. “How close where you?”

“Close enough.” N’Ellie was being vague and would remain so until she knew what this woman wanted.

“Lovers?” Autumn asked.

She didn’t mean to but N’Ellie snorted. “Have you bothered to read his file Special Agent? Josh had severe obsessive compulsive disorder, and haphephobia.” She smirked that doctor’s smirk as she dumbed it down for the other woman. “A deep rooted phobia about being touched. There was no  psychological way he could have been anyone’s lover.”

“And yet you were close friends?” Autumn pushed. She’d felt the alien mental shields go up, but still managed to grab a few snippets. “You had feelings for him?”

“I cared about him, yes.” N’Ellie replied.

“Love?”

N’Ellie didn’t reply right away. She’d been turning that question over and over in her own mind for days now, and still had no real answer. “I don’t know.”

Autumn nodded, she could sense the honestly in that reply. “Did he care about you in the same way?”

“I honestly couldn’t tell you.” N’Ellie said. “I guess, as much as he was able to, yes.” Getting tired of looking up at the woman, N’Ellie got to her feet so she could look her in the eye as she asked, “What’s all this about, Special Agent?”

“You’re pregnant?” Autumn asked, genuinely surprised.

N’Ellie crossed her arms over her chest. “Yes.”

“Is the child Josh Garrity’s?” Autumn asked. That she had read; he and his brother were genetically enhanced, they’re almost meta like abilities biologically engineered. Any offspring would in part also be genetically enhanced. Well, she through, this is a new pickle in the jar.

It was pure instinct, she knew the risks of the truth and there was no way in hell she’d give the Federation reason to take her children. “No, they’re not. I just told you that Josh was unable to touch or be touched. That would make having sex rather hard.”

“You once claimed he was your mate.” Autumn shot out.

“To get an unstable young man off Josh’s case.” N’Ellie replied easily. It surprised her at times how easily lying came to her. “A nurse who followed him from a previous assignment with a very disturbing obsession.”

Autumn couldn’t read this hybrid. She wasn’t as strong a telepath as her aunt and alien minds were often hard for her to read. It didn’t help that this one had strong Betazoid shielding, and the typically chaotic mind of a Klingon. “The father of your child…”

“Not sure,” N’Ellie shrugged. “One night stand, was drunk as hell, all I remember is a really great ass.” She smirked as she leaned against her desk.

“You’re Klingon…”

“What gave it away?” N’Ellie said sarcastically. “The forehead ridges or the first name with two capital letters and an apostrophe?”

This woman was really starting to piss Autumn off. “You’re a Klingon from a Nobel House and you expect me to believe you’re having a child without a proper mate?”

“Actually,” N’Ellie replied, her voice dropping so it sounded as if she were about to confess a huge secret. “I’m a Klingon fusion from a Nobel House having twins without a proper mate. Now would you explain why Special Forces has a sudden interest in my sex life?”

“My interest is in your relationship with Josh Garrity.” Autumn replied.

“We were friends,” N’Ellie said. “Close friends, who knows maybe it could have been more, but it wasn’t. Then it turns out he’s the son of my surrogate mother’s husband. As you can imagine things got real messy around here.”

“So your close to the Murgos?”

N’Ellie nodded. “To Joanna, didn’t care much for the Admiral.”

“Why?” Autumn asked.

“Didn’t trust him.” She tapped her head. “His mental presence just didn’t sit right.”

Autumn regarding the woman for several long moments before finally deciding to ask. “If Mister Garrity were to run, where would he go?”

That caught N’Ellie by surprise and it showed on her face despite the calmness in her voice. “Depends, he alone?”

“No.” Was all Autumn would say.

Zack,  N’Ellie knew for sure, maybe Mac. She’d have to let Anna know about Mac, and Vivie about the threat to her son. Then there was Five, who didn’t want to know who the father was, but she needed to know about the threat right? But then again if she didn’t know, then no one else would have to either. “There’s no reason for them to come here. Josh’s only real connection is with Zack, and if they’re together that’s all that’ll matter.”

“And Patrick McEntire?” Autumn asked. “I hear his girlfriend just gave birth to his children?”

Kahless, she hated knowing these people had people watching them. “Restraining order. Mac’s got anger and risk issues, she didn’t feel safe having him near the babies.”

“So they’d be a threat?” Autumn asked.

“No,” N’Ellie replied honestly. “Mac’s hotheaded, a big dumb lug, follows Josh around like a puppy dog. The only threat those three could be to anyone would be Keepers.”

Keepers, Gorn, missing shuttle, missing arms… Fuck! “Thank you Doctor.”

N’Elie watched as the woman simply turned and left. As soon as she was alone she sank into her desk chair and muttered, “Fuck.”

A.D.A Alex Cabot: He's as bad as his client hoping the victim is to traumatized to testify! He’s lucky I didn’t knock his teeth down his throat!

Capt. Don Cragen: I’d pay real money to see that.
