Meditation by Ensign Aaron Markus There he was, on the USS Tolstoy. Red alert klaxons were going off all around him. The ship was shuddering from the shock of the pounding they were getting from the Borg. There it was looming ominously on the view screen, a big black cube, with bolts shooting out of it, hitting everything in sight. The sight of it made him shudder in his seat. He looked down and there was the helm. Someone was shouting from behind. "Move in underneath, we'll have a better shot from there." He turned and saw the tactical officer frantically trying to stay on his feet and fire the weapons at the same time, while being tossed about. Lt. Cmdr. Allon Markus was a tall man with a strong jaw and muscular physique. He was taller than most Vulcans, but then he was only half Vulcan. The other half comprised of human DNA from his father. As for the young man sitting at helm, he was but a fledgling compared to the man he was staring at. Bang!!! The computer panel next to him exploded and the young ensign was thrown to the floor. Several others were injured as well. The tactical officer had jumped down to see if everybody was all right. "The warp core is gonna breach, and there's nothing I can do," came over the Com. The tactical officer checked the captain and found him unconscious along with most of the bridge crew. "All hands, abandon ship," he yelled into his COM badge. Being the senior officer conscious, it was up to him to make that determination. Allon began picking up one after another of the bridge crew and taking them to the turbo lift. The helmsman was the fifth one to be piled in.As he laid there barely able to move. He saw another explosion just as the Lt. Cmdr. was telling the turbolift to take the passengers to deck 5, where the escape pods were. Allon was thrown across the other side of the bridge and the turbolift doors closed. "No!!!" was all the ensign could get out. The next moments were a blur as the turbolift doors reopened on deck 5 to see two crewmen begin gathering the pile of unconscious officers and place them in escape pods. With the captain strapped to one chair and him in the other, the escape pod launched from the ship along with a few other pods. Then there was the explosion, and a bright flash. "No!!!! Father!!! Ensign Aaron Markus awoke in sick bay, covered in sweat and breathing like he had been drowning. The nurse ran in with a tricorder in hand. "Are you okay, sir? What's wrong?" she asked as she swept the tricorder over the ensign. "I'm ok," putting his hand up to indicate the tricorder wouldn't be needed. "I just had a..nightmare." Obviously Aaron wasn't really ever on the Tolstoy. "Ok," said the nurse. "Holler if you need anything." Aaron just nodded as the nurse turned and walked back to the office. Slowly he remembered how the doctor had asked him to stay for observation, because he almost passed out on the bridge earlier. He knew what he had to do. The dimly lit sickbay was no place to meditate. It can get busy as hell in a moments notice. He needed a place he could go where no one would be disturbing him for a few hours. Aaron looked at the chronometer. All the holodecks would be in use about now. And his quarters were too close to the lounge, no quiet there. He then thought of the perfect place. He headed off, out of sickbay and down the hall toward Main Engineering before the nurse could even protest. He soon arrived at his destination and took one of the Jefferies tubes near Engineering to the little spot he had found only a few weeks ago just above where the top of the warp core entered the hallowed compartment. All that could be heard was the constant low hum of the warp core. It brought a certain serenity to all that was chaos in this huge metal "boat." He closed his eyes and slowly entered a strong meditative state that anything short of the warp core breaching wouldn't bring him out of.
