Frankly, I wasn't too keen on the translations from the Macross Saga. It can
understand they wanted to change the story to fit in with the other series they
were splicing into robotech, but just the Macross Saga is riddled errors the
creators never bothered to fix. Too many times I've seen Azonian carrying on
conversations with a female officer who, for some reason, has a man's voice.
References to the Robotech masters appear out of nowhere and for no apprent
reason, and there didn't seem to be any plausible explanation for trying to
convince people that there was an SDF-2 standing behind SDF-1 during Kamjin's
attack. (For years I thought they had just renamed the ship to launch it back
into space until someone told me differently.)
The original Macross series has alot of strong points I wish were preserved in
Robotech, most notably Minmei's songs and the narrator's droning on and on...
mainly though, there's Roy. Robotech made him out to be a kind of war hero,
dedicated soldier who devoted his whole life to the RDF. Macross would beg to
differ, in fact in one of the more notable dialog changes was the flashback
where Hikaru (Rick in Robotech) was sitting in the field of flowers after the
Earth's destruction: Roy explains perfectly clearly his reason for fighting.
"THINK OF ALL THOSE WOMEN!"
One other question someone can probably answer for me later: What the hell
happened to Dana's hair? She had green hair when she was a baby, but went
Blonde right before Sentinels. Anyone care to explain?

and otehs came up with, was I thought a
great adaptation. I can't recall another anime translation project like
Robotech,
but Iusually find that when they translate they water down tehstories, not the
case
here. In many ways the story of Robotech is superior to each of the individual
stories of Macross, Southern Cross, and Genesis Climber. It's just too bad they
had to do some watering down for a child audience in america, however
Robotech still stands as the most mature cartoon in aerica on teh subject of
war,
culture, and the ONLY cartoon with love plot soap opera that was actually worth
watching.
It's too bad they didn't kep the original meanign of "Proto-Culture" from
Macross,
as in the original culture, BUT the concept of the plant as power source not
only
bridged the three into one (whoa, Coincidence?), but was an original sci-fi
concept all on its own, whiel maintaining the more interesting points from each
individual show.
