The ram-scoop system your talking about is also called a Bussard Ramjet. In order to extract ambient hydrogen in space the ship needs a huge magnetic funnel and also needs to be travelling just below the speed of light. I doubt the veritechs regularlly flew that quickly. Check out the article from my original post, though. It has a realife air-breathing nuclear ramjet that was actually ground-tested but never flew.
