As far as I know that explanation of the nuclear heated reaction mass is
teh concept
of how teh Valkyries, and all power systems of "Over-technology" work.
In Genesis Climber, I think the ideas was that the mechas used hydrogen
fusion,
and the canisters were hydrogen cells, which the teh Inbidt coveted because
their
metabolism worked by fusing hydrogen.
In Robotech: The same idea, it just uses Reflex Energy produced in a Reflex
Furnace to heat the reaction mass. By the time of the Third Robotech War they
are able
to make Reflex Cells, that can be charged with reflex Energy from a furnace.
Here's just a 'science-fact-to-fiction' theory for the propulsion of
Valkyires that's fom
my own head, not supported by the cartoon. The Space Shuttle's tri-rockets are
powered by hydrogen and oxygen mixed together, that's right water,
elecrolytcially
broken form H2O into H2 and O, stored in the big tank and then recombined in
the
engines. The reaction of H2+O yeilds water and a sh@t load of heat energy.
Maybe
the intakes of the valkyires pull in atmospheric H20, split it use a little
hydrogen for
fusion to power the electrolysis to split the rest and then recombine it for
propulsion.
Then in space the inateks can pull in interstellar hydrogen, and teh FAST packs
hold
the oxygen.
