Dear TV Freelancer,
Lots to tell you about in this one. All the items have links on our front
page at www.tvfreelancers.org.uk.
1. Proposals are afoot in Europe to change the Working Time legislation.
Amongst other changes, this will restrict use of the 48-hour working week
opt-out - and provide an absolute maximum working week of 65 hours. Suffice
it to say, that if this goes through, our working lives could change
radically. We've got all the info and implications on our site, and a new
debate in our forum which we'd like you to contribute to.
2. BECTU and PACT have raised their agreed suggested freelance rates. New
figures and full info on the site.
3. The National Minimum Wage is going up. Entry-level, low-paid workers like
runners and even researchers can use this fact to keep their working hours
reasonable. We tell you how.
4. Broadcast picked up the poll we ran about working hours on the 25th
February, and has a piece on the results in this week's issue (18 March,
page 15). Unsurprisingly, they headline with the fact that if the EU
proposals mentioned above were law today, 10% of freelancers would be
working illegal hours. Poll results on the site.
Please forward this message to other friends and colleagues who might like
to sign up to our mailing list via the site. There are about 30,000
freelancers out there, and a lot of them still haven't heard about TVFL -
please help us change that.
Very best wishes, as ever,
www.tvfreelancers.org.uk
