Dear TV Freelancer,
This is the latest update from www.tvfreelancers.org.uk - the new online
initiative for freelancers in the UK TV industry.
You'll be glad to know we've been attracting attention from all sides,
since setting up our website only a little over a month ago. The new
forum has had over 1600 hits since we added counters a month ago, and
posting continues on a variety of subjects. If you haven't had a look
recently, please do pay a visit and join in the debate.
We've included a response from BECTU on the site, and the union has also
contributed several postings to the forum. The NUJ's broadcast office
are expressing equally strong interest, with a similar response in the
pipeline.
So what's happening at the moment? Government minister Kim Howells has
recently asked for suggestions from independent production companies on
ways their lot could be improved. We feel that the situation facing
freelancers deserves just as much attention, and are working on a
response that will remind Kim Howells that we are a huge tier in the
supply chain whose working conditions should not be overlooked.
We're also working on two very specific mechanisms for the website which
we hope you'll be able to access within the next couple of months. One
will allow you to contribute and share information about freelance
rates, searchable by job and by experience. The other will enable you to
contribute information about specific production companies, or to be put
in touch with others who already have experience of those companies -
invaluable if you are about to work for an employer who is new to you.
We have also received very generous offers of support from
productionbase in terms of web hosting facilities. This initiative began
as a result of a discussion thread on the productionbase forum, and
their staunch support will help us to develop a stronger, more
interactive web presence. They already have a link to us from the home
page of the productionbase site, and have offered to spread the word to
their thousands of subscribers - which we hope will take place within
the next few weeks.
Arriving in your inbox along with this email should be another message,
which you can keep and forward on to freelance friends and colleagues.
It contains basic information about our initiative and is designed as an
easy way for you to tell others about what we are doing. We are keen to
build our mailing list subscription, as we feel that this strength in
numbers will eventually give us the clout needed to begin lobbying for
change. Please send it on to anyone who you feel might be interested.
Finally, if you'd like to contribute a very small amount of your own
time and get involved in the organisation of this initiative, we would
like to hear from you. We need to have enough people involved so that we
avoid the risk of everyone being busy with TV work at once, which could
restrict the momentum of the project. In particular we will soon need
help from people with some experience of creating simple web pages so
that our site can be kept up to date on a regular basis. If you think
you can help out with this - or would like to get involved in any other
way - please email us at info@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx .
Very best wishes,
