[UK TV Freelancers] Pact submissions; driving when tired

Dear TV Freelancer,

1. Those who have seen the latest Broadcast will have read that BBC chairman
Michael Grade and DG Mark Thompson are the latest industry voices to speak
out against illegal employment conditions. You can catch up with the latest
on our site at http://www.tvfreelancers.org.uk, and read the article in the
open discussion forum.

PACT, the representative body of independent producers, has now expressed
its desire to address such practices. They have invited individual
freelancers to directly submit evidence in confidence, and TV Freelancers
has offered to compile such evidence in order to streamline a submission. We
have already begun collating the emails received so far, and this is the
last chance to submit. Visit the site to see what we're looking for, and
email us on evidence@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx As usual, anonymity is your
choice.

2. A word of warning, which we offer now as a result of some of the
submissions we're getting. Tiredness at the wheel could cause you more
problems than you'd think. In April 2003, after the Selby train crash, the
Court of Appeal laid down a list of aggravating factors for the offense of
causing death by dangerous driving. One of the factors was driving whilst
being deprived of sleep or rest. And if any of the factors are shown to be
present, then this could result in a prison sentence.

You should staunchly refuse to drive long distances if the schedule will not
allow you to get enough sleep beforehand. Quite apart from the risks to
yourself, if you caused a fatal accident to a third party by nodding off,
you would be the one who ends up in jail - not your production manager.

Very best wishes
