[UK TV Freelancers] PACT/BECTU agreement

Dear TV Freelancer,

This message is probably one of the most important we have ever sent
you. Please take a couple of minutes to read it. Your response to this
message will help us create fairer conditions for freelancers.

As you're probably aware, the recently revised PACT/BECTU agreement
includes various new provisions for freelancers employed by PACT member
independent companies - such as a contribution by the employer into the
freelancer's BECTU stakeholder pension (which you do not have to be a
BECTU member to set up). The agreement is wide-ranging, and covers many
other aspects of working conditions, hours, calculation of holiday pay,
and so on.

However, if the freelancer is not specifically employed under the terms
of the PACT/BECTU agreement, the employer is under no requirement to
adhere to it - even if the company is a PACT member. The agreement is
only of any value when it is (a) used, and (b) adhered to. And to assess
that value, the agreement has to be monitored. That's why we are asking
for your help now.

We really need to know from you whether the agreement is making the
intended difference to your working lives. Is your employer using it?
And if they are using it, are they sticking to it? A simple form has
been created which will take you just a couple of minutes to fill in. If
you, and thousands of freelancers like you, all take the time to return
these, it could make an enormous difference to the value of an agreement
which BECTU and PACT have both worked extremely hard to achieve.

be held in complete confidence (in other words, there is no danger of
employers getting wind of the details you supply). Whether you're a
BECTU member or not, please help us to help you by establishing the real
