[UK TV Freelancers] Latest news

Dear TV Freelancers,

The last couple of weeks have seen something of an explosion both in
hits on our website at www.tvfreelancers.org.uk, and subscriptions to
this mailing list. Word of mouth is doing a great job for us even before
we have officially launched, and we are supplying a clearly felt need
amongst freelancers. Since the list has grown so quickly, I am sending
out another email alongside this one which you can all forward to tell
freelance friends and colleagues about our site. Please use it! We will
also shortly be launching the site more emphatically via an email to all
freelance Productionbase members, and there are other new moves afoot as
well.

Rather earlier than intended, we have begun to speak out in defence of
freelancers' rights. A leading UK production company recently published
a job advertisement for a 'runner/DV operator' which many contributors
to our forum felt was wholly inappropriate. Consequently, at the request
of contributors, we began a new forum topic where freelancers were
invited to offer their views on this advert. Armed with a string of new
messages speaking out on this subject, we have now approached the
company concerned to make them aware of this discussion, and are
awaiting a response from them. To add your voice to this debate - or to
follow its outcome - here is a direct link to the topic:

As promised we are also contacting Dr Kim Howells, Parliamentary
Under-Secretary of State (and Minister for Tourism, Film and
Broadcasting), to request that the government moves to safeguard the
working conditions of freelancers and ends practices such as the
systematic abuse of the Working Time Regulations. We'll keep you posted
via email and the website as and when we have a response.

Finally, a few people have been having occasional problems posting in
the forum. Please note that you do NOT need to register with EZboard
(the internet service who hosts the forum) in order to read it or post
on it. The discussion forum is open to everyone. When you post a new
message, you will be asked for a username and password - but you can
enter any username you like, and leave the password field blank.

Thanks for your continuing support!
