Dear TV Freelancer,
Yes, we've been quiet on the email, but not behind the scenes. A few things
to report this week:
1. On the 28th August, as we already told you, there's a session at the
Edinburgh Television festival about freelance exploitation. (Their website
is www.mgeitf.co.uk and the session is 10am Sunday morning, if you want to
have a look.) TV Freelancers are well represented at the session, with a
representative from TV Wrap on the panel and another TVFL founder
contributing from the floor. The debate is likely to generate some coverage
- if we have anything to do with it, anyway. But we want to be truly
representative of your views. If there is a contribution you'd like to make
to the debate, let us know your opinion and we'll do our best to pass it on.
Is exploitation happening? More or less than before TV Wrap? Has PACT done
enough to respond to the issues - and are they the ones who ought to be in
the firing line anyway? Let us know what you think.
2. We've compiled a full run-down of all the significant press coverage
since the start of the TV Wrap campaign in April this year. If you've missed
the whole thing (or even if you haven't), it makes fascinating reading. You
can catch up on the full vigour of the row, and the moves implemented since,
in our forum at http://p206.ezboard.com/fuktvfreelancersfrm4 . (Thanks to
Media Guardian, Broadcast and Broadcast Freelancer for permission to
reproduce these.)
3. Finally, TVFL's sister organisation, the Escape Route, has made a
valuable start helping those of you disaffected enough to want to look into
other career options. It launched a few months ago offering careers coaching
at reduced rates for an introductory period; but you can only book at those
rates now until the end of August (although you can take the sessions
later). Take a look at the site (www.tvescaperoute.co.uk) to find out more,
and to read feedback from our first Escapers.
That's all for now. But more to come soon. Please keep using our interactive
rates and employer databases - they are a really valuable asset and we're
always keen for more entries.
All the best as ever,
www.tvfreelancers.org.uk
