Dear TV Freelancer,
1. The big news in the last few weeks is the EU ruling on holiday pay -
which has made it clear, once and for all, that a worker's entitlement to
paid time off cannot be deliberately replaced by an element of pay. It is
further and final confirmation that the practice of deducting holiday pay
from a freelancer's agreed rate, to add it back on at the end of their
contract, is entirely contrary to European law. We're stepping up our
campaign to find out which employers are still doing this - email us at
holidaypay@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx if you come across this practice. More on
the front page of our site at www.tvfreelancers.org.uk - and news coverage,
together with comment on the ruling and what it means for TV freelancers, is
in our forum here:
http://p206.ezboard.com/fuktvfreelancersfrm4.showMessage?topicID=366.topic
2. BECTU is asking permanent and fixed-term-contract staff in independent
production companies to get in touch and let the union know about their work
experiences - good, bad or indifferent. There is an Agreement between BECTU
and PACT covering freelances working for indies on short-term contracts, but
there is no equivalent arrangement for those on longer-running arrangements.
This is why the union is asking indie staff to get in touch, to help build
up a picture of working conditions for staff across the sector, and help the
union target its resources on the key issues of most concern.
To take part, just go to http://www.bectu.org.uk/indies and fill in the
short questionnaire.
3. TVYP (Television for Young People) offers people aged 18-21 a unique
opportunity to learn from some of the leading lights of the TV industry in a
series of thought-provoking master classes and through practical tasks.
The programme runs from 24-28 August and is part of the Media Guardian
Edinburgh International Television Festival (MGEITF). Fast Track is the TV
Festival's talent initiative for people aged 22 plus, who have 2-4 years
experience in the television industry. 40 delegates attend a specialist
event alongside MGEITF - a series of informal master classes from top
industry figures. Both TVYP and Fast Track are free to attend. Please see
the websites for more information - www.tvyp.co.uk and
www.mgeitf.co.uk/fasttrack.
That's it for now,
All the best as usual,
