*Who Says Science Can't Be Fun?*
Academic research about interactive television has been hovering around
(http://itv.eltrun.aueb.gr/about/) --with little success so far-- for at
least 10 years now, under the names of technologies such as multimedia,
VOD, CDROM, CDI, broadband Internet, digital STBs, etc. Each of the
previous research efforts has contributed considerable results, which
are now giving shape to interactive television products and these are
also giving birth to an ongoing research about TV centric home
infotainment appliances that we keep track of under the section Home
Media Station (http://itv.eltrun.aueb.gr/topics/hms/). Additionally, we
firmly believe that the emerging academic treatment of video games
(http://www.ludology.org) is contributing, apart from hi-end hardware
and software, the necessary understanding for designing computer
mediated leisure applications. Most notably, the game playing and
scientific approach are being intermixed in the Media Lab Europe
(http://www.wired.com/news/games/0,2101,57232,00.html) research
projects.
*Sony-The complete home entertainer?*
We have been closely covering developments in consumer electronics, home
networking for entertainment and in general information technology
forays into the living room (http://itv.eltrun.aueb.gr/topics/hms/). For
most of these innovations the role of Sony is instrumental. Recently,
diverse and high-profile publications have been paying tribute to these
efforts, by presenting the steady process of household penetration with
devices and content that carry Sony's logo. Wired magazine is describing
an ongoing civil war between Sony's electronics and media divisions
(http://www.wired.com/wired/archive/11.02/sony.html). Economist is
giving an analysis of the Japanese giant's mentality and strategy
(http://www.economist.com/business/displayStory.cfm?story_id=1606326),
while Newsweek is describing how the spirit of its founders is still
evident in most of Sony's innovations.

*A Conceptual Model for Future TiVo Services*
http://itv.eltrun.aueb.gr/articles/2003/03chorianopoulos/
This research is based on the realization that the desktop computing
paradigm is not appropriate for television, because it is adapted to
fundamentally different user aspirations and activities. Instead, the
virtual channel is proposed as a model that explains the proper design
of user access to interactive television programming. The virtual
channel is a model that aids the organization and dynamic presentation
of television programming from a combination of live broadcasts,
prerecorded content and Internet resources for each set-top box. In this
article, we introduce the rationale and benefits of the virtual channel
model for interactive television applications.
