*Computer Game Research 101*
Hope that you had enough relaxing, video gaming and interactive
entertainment through your trusted television screen for this holiday
season. In case you feel a bit guilty about leaving behind some of your
obligations then here comes the remedy. Nowadays, if you like so much
video-games you may either turn your passion into academic research or
simply put a scientific cover over it! Begin by reading an introduction
to the literature about computer games
(http://www.game-research.com/art_computer_game_research.asp). You can
also read the previous posting, which is focused on Artificial
Intelligence (AI) research applied to modern video-games. This is not a
kid's stuff!

*Interactive television through the mobile phone*
A case that reinforces our belief that interactive television is a
viable new medium (http://itv.eltrun.aueb.gr/about/), although its form
cannot be clearly outlined. Europe's TV screens have filled-up with
telephone numbers to which viewers can send text messages from their
mobile phones. There are numerous functions: 1) TV chatting, 2) voting
in reality shows, 3) reception of additional information, 4) ring-tones
and logos. And let me quote Economist, from a recent article about
television and mobile-phone text-messaging
(http://www.economist.com/business/displayStory.cfm?story_id=1392699):
"It does not mean that the traditional approach to interactive TV is
doomed: indeed, it demonstrates that there is strong demand for
interactive services. People, it seems, really do want to do more than
just stare at the screen."

*PVR Flood Warning in Effect*
An article about an HMS device (http://itv.eltrun.aueb.gr/topics/hms/).
PC Magazine, although it does a great job keeping track of its core
(that is PCs) it also seems equally interested in the emergence of home
entertainment devices that are based on PC technologies, namely hard
disks and editing functions. TiVo and ReplayTV have been there for a
while. The Media Center Edition of Windows XP is already here, but the
PC Magazine article is about an HMS device from Panasonic
(http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,4149,543429,00.asp): It is a DVD player
plus VCR plus TiVo plus DVD recorder plus digital photo viewer. It also
fits nicely into our definition of what is an HMS device
(http://itv.eltrun.aueb.gr/articles/2002/11chorianopoulos/). The
article's author reconfirms our position that some basic usability and
marketing principles are missing -even from such great offerings- and
are necessary for market success.

*A Remedy for Television Advertising in the Age of TiVo*
http://itv.eltrun.aueb.gr/articles/2003/01chorianopoulos/
In the past, television viewers had become accustomed to the burden of
irrelevant advertising, but lately, technological innovation has allowed
them to record television programming and fast-forward through the
advertising breaks. The wide spread use of TiVo-like devices may mean
the end of advertising supported television programming. In this article
we describe how local-storage and processing of advertising spots can be
used to target advertising-breaks for each set-top box, according to
household and individual characteristics.

A defining moment for TV
http://www.usatoday.com/tech/news/2003-01-06-digital-tv_x.htm
More than two decades after the nation's TV industries started tinkering
with the next generation of broadcasting, pieces of the transition
finally seem to be clicking into place.

Is That a TiVo Under the Tree?

Personal video recorders like TiVo and ReplayTV have a growing base of
passionate customers. Still, PVRs have a long way to go before becoming
part of the mainstream.
