*At big consumer electronics show, the buzz is all about connections*
During the recent CES 2003 even TiVo -the reigning king of digital video
storage- has shifted its focus from being the centerpiece of home
entertainment and announced that the new vision is towards
interoperability between various infotainment appliances
(http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&u=/nf/20030110/tc_nf/20438)
. This phenomenon is also documented in a recent article by the New York
Times (http://www.nytimes.com/2003/01/13/technology/13DIGI.html), which
describes how the PC, the digital set-top box and the stereo are finally
coming into networking and cooperating with each other -and, by the way,
displaying a user friendly interface on the television screen.
Understanding Interactive Television has been tracking this trend for
some time now under the paper section Home Media Station
(http://itv.eltrun.aueb.gr/topics/hms/), where you can find the academic
perspective for an emerging class of home infotainment appliances.

*Television's 30-second spot is lurching toward extinction*
According to Henry Jenkins, the director of the MIT's comparative media
studies laboratory,
(http://www.technologyreview.com/articles/wo_jenkins090602.asp)
television's 30-second spot is going to be replaced by subliminal
advertising --actors are using Nokia phones, or one can see billboard
ads of products-- during a television show. This is a marketing
communication strategy that has been employed for some time now in
Hollywood's movies, most notably in the James Bond's movies. In our
opinion, subliminal advertising during a television show is going to
co-exist with the traditional 30-second spot, because of regulatory and
cost issues, and mainly because the 30-second spot can now be improved
and adapt to interactive television technology
(http://itv.eltrun.aueb.gr/articles/2003/01chorianopoulos/).

*The Current State of Usability Design for Interactive Television*
http://itv.eltrun.aueb.gr/articles/2003/02chorianopoulos/
Despite the increased deployment of digital television technology and
the widespread use of the internet, interactive television has yet to
replace analog television or overcome the personal computer as the
preferred device for interactive infotainment in the home. Nevertheless,
both the media and the consumer electronics industries are keen on
trying to develop a viable product. Next, we review briefly the current
situation of interactive television from the perspective of usability
design.
