*Book review: Digital Interactive TV and Metadata*
One way to determine the level of growth of a research field is to assess
the availability of relevant conferences, journals and books. In particular,
the availability of books is a good measure of the maturity of a field,
since they provide an overview of a critical mass of published work. In the
interactive TV field, there been a few conferences and special issues in
journals, but books are still scarce. So, it was a pleasant surprise to
discover the book "Digital Interactive TV and Metadata", which was written
by a very active team of researchers from the Digital Media Institute at the
Tampere University of Technology, in Finland. Read the rest of the book

A farewell to ads?
http://www.economist.com/business/displayStory.cfm?story_id=2598890
Personal video recorders should worry the big media firms. Fear of PVRS has
stalked the industry since they appeared in 1999, but until now there have
been relatively few users. Recent promotions mean the use of PVRs will grow
rapidly. As more people skip past their ads, advertisers will refuse to pay
what they now do for TV spots.

Must-download TV
http://www.salon.com/tech/feature/2004/08/11/must_download_tv/index_np.html
The latest developments in TV-show-trading technology mean you don't need
TiVo to watch what you want, when you want. Hollywood's nightmare scenario
is that high-definition TV will become "Napsterized," with shows available
online to anyone, anytime, for free -- which may sound, to some TV fans,
less like a nightmare than a heavenly dream.

Olympics Spur Record Use of BBC Interactive TV
http://www.reuters.com/newsArticle.jhtml?type=televisionNews&storyID=6032157
A record-breaking 6.1 million UK television watchers have used an
interactive service that enables them to see a different Olympic event than
the one being broadcast over the air by the BBC.

Movie, TV Fans Ogle Video to Go
http://www.wired.com/news/digiwood/0,1412,64181,00.html
Forget DVDs. Leave the iPod at home. The latest in consumer electronics is
portable video players that let people watch recorded movies and TV programs
anywhere. Microsoft is leading the charge with its small-screen format.

Nielsen 'People Meters' Draw Fire
http://wired.com/news/business/0,1367,63080,00.html
With nearly $60 billion in advertising revenues at stake, measuring
television viewership is a task that leaves little room for mistakes. That's
why Nielsen Media Research, the firm that has had a monopoly on audience
measurement since the 1950s, has often had to defend its measurement
techniques to network and advertising executives.

Sky announces plans for FTA satellite, HDTV
http://www.theinquirer.net/?article=16477
Sky has announced plans for High Definition Television and FTA (free-to-air)
satellite following high demand, which will address both premium pay-TV and
free-to-air audiences.
