Thank you for the wonderful turnout of UHNA members at the special meeting concerning the Martin Luther King project. This is a non-technical summary which will deal with the issues which concerned our neighborhood. 1. The original proposal to eliminate left hand turns from and to Riddle Rd from MLK has been dropped. There will be some larger pedestrian islands in the intersection with MLK and Clifton. 2. The original proposal to take 10,000 sq. feet of Burnett Woods to allow for another left turn lane, has also been dropped from the city plan. Instead only a small portion of the Woods on the corners will be taken to make room for the pedestrian islands and facilitate turning (about 2000 sq ft from both corners combined). The city will replace all trees taken 3. There will be a side path along extending down MLK to Clifton for bicyclers and pedestrians. The above represents major concessions from the City from their original plan and demonstrates what can happen if the community groups like CUF and Clifton Town Meeting work together. A big thank you to Rolf Kuhn for the flyers alerting the neighbors to the potential problems. The downside to this "victory" is that the congestion problem on MLK and Riddle Rd. will not be lessened. The city rejected the idea of a light at Riddle and MLK as not feasible. There will not be a light at Probasco because of the concession on the turn lanes. Many other issues were discussed especially by the CTM board members.
