Hi John,
I take your point, but I hope that a transcriber note would say something like:
"The sign .- [dots 4-6, 3-6] indicates a missing item" - something along those
lines, rather than "The sign .- [4-6, 3-6] indicates an underscore/lowline".
The former is much more explicit than the latter. :)
Hope this helps.
With best regards,
James.

Hi James,
That is very helpful - I still believe that a non-sighted examinee should not
have to learn what a sighted person has in front of them and the JCQ informed
accordingly, viz 'ing' or 3,46 - the non-sighted examination participant needs
to know where a missing digit or letter (algebra) occurs - not what kind of
container/shape/line a sighted student has to indicate the spot that needs to
be filled! ;-)
John.

Hi John,
In terms of the missing number, this has been flagged about the old SEB
convention being used.
I do not know what will be used this year - as you are aware, there is a choice
of method to indicate missing items in UEB, see the Guidelines for Technical
Material, section 3.6.
I would suggest that hopefully a transcriber note will indicate what sign is
being used.
Incidentally, the issue of missing *digits* (rather than entire numbers) has
been exercising UKAAF to work out a good way to show this. There are no
examples of missing digits, or showing only part of a number, in GTM.
--
Regarding separating question numbers, as far as I am aware, there is no
"correct" way to do this as it is a formatting issue. It will be left to house
style for the transcription agency. I have seen some exam papers where each
question simply starts on a new page.
The sign dot 5, 2-5 is a UEB horizontal line indicator. The "correct" way to do
a dotted line would then be a line of dot 2's; or a solid line, a line of dot
2-5s (see Rules of Unified English Braille section 16.2).
So, the difference between an old-style (SEB) solid horizontal line and a
technically correct UEB horizontal line is merely that the first cell is dot 5
instead of dot 2-5 (hardly noticed by some) Similarly a dotted line in UEB
starts with dot 5, 2-5, instead of 2, 2.
So, as far as how new questions are shown, this shouldn't really be affected by
the change to UEB.
I hope this helps somewhat.
With best regards,
James.

Update - found this:

Which is still incorrect in terms of missing information - but await correction!

Dear Colleagues,
We have an MLP copy of KS1 but no Braille Copies of the 2016 tests which are
due for modification for next Monday. Having looked at KS2 for 2015 in UEB the
missing number/item sign used was actually SEB - number sign followed by cells
3,6 3,6. As I understand it in correct UEB rules, if a Number sign is present
then a number should follow and that if there is a missing item, this should be
indicated purely by 'ing' without a number sign.
Also what is the correct layout of separating out question numbers? In the 2015
KS2 Paper, the separation line is indicated by cells 5, 2,5 5, then row of
cell 5's to the right of the page.
All (correct) advice greatly appreciated.
