Hi John,
In both these cases, I take it that "2+" and "2-" are all superscripted.
Unfortunately this has not come out in your email.
In this case, you have a superscript that consists of more than a simple number
or single character, so you will need to use "braille grouping indicators"
(note, not brackets) to group the two symbols into an "item".
An item is a formally defined concept in UEB and you can find the definition in
RUEB 11.4, GTM 7.1, Using UEB for Mathematics or Using UEB for Science (it's
important enough to be included in all four publications and probably appears
in others, too).
So, the braille grouping signs are used to make a group of symbols which are
all included in the superscript.
Note that braille grouping signs need to be in grade 1 mode, as does the
superscript indicator.
So, your examples should read:
;;,ca9<#b"6> ⠰⠰⠠⠉⠁⠔⠣⠼⠃⠐⠖⠜
And
;;,o9<#b"-> ⠰⠰⠠⠕⠔⠣⠼⠃⠐⠤⠜
I hope this helps.
With best regards,
James.

I have been looking at examples on page 31 and 32 of 'Using UEB for Science'
and I am trying to ensure that I represent
Ca2+ and O2- in the correct format – do I need to enclose the superscript in
brackets or is it just a straightforward 'in' followed by number and symbol for
'plus' and 'minus' respectively?
