Hi John,

I agree with what James says.

I proofread children's books in Grades 1 and 2 and they have the same layout.

They both use indentations for poetry and indexes.

I think children do need to get the hang of indents at some point as they will encounter them in material they read from a variety of sources.

Kind regards,
Judith

Hi John,

I don't think there are any rules relating to grade 1 and no indentation - the two issues are independent as far as I am aware. There's nothing about this in the Braillists' Manual.

In the vast majority of cases I've seen, if you ask for uncontracted braille (grade 1) then the layout ought to be the same.

I would assume (and it is an assumption) that the reason for requesting no indentation is simply to help with a more regular text position to aid tracking for the less experienced braillist.

I trust this helps.

With best regards,

James.

Hi James,

I have requested that the Manual be ordered with some urgency. Are there any rules that may not be covered in respect of Grade 1 layout and no indentation?

Many thanks.

John.

Hi John,

That's right, you will not find information in RUEB about layout, because UEB is a code, not a format.

The book you could look in is the RNIB Braillists' Manual. This book is all about layout of everything from title pages to indexes and almost everything in between.
There is a section on poetry and another on line numbering.

The RNIB Braillists' Manual is meant as the RNIB house style, so not a definitive UK way, but it is the most detailed work in the UK dealing with formatting and layout.

Let me know if you need any further information.

With best regards,

James.

Hi,

I am in the process of transforming the above works into UEB Grade 1 Braille. I have been struggling to find anything in either the UEB primer or the 'Rules of Unified English Braille 2013'.

The Grade 1 user does not use indents at all and there are some poems that use further indentation when 'quoting' is the best I can describe it, in italics (John Agard's 'Checking Out Me History').

I would also like to know the layout of Grade 2 for any students currently used to Grade 2 and indents but none of our current students use or are accustomed to indentation.

Any advice greatly appreciated.
