Durante il ciclo di sviluppo di Dapper ho lavorato più o meno a tempo pieno;
dalle 7 alle 12 ore al giorno, a seconda di vari fattori.

Xubuntu ha personalizzato XFCE e sembra abbastanza differente dalla versione
standard, quali erano secondo te i motivi per questo?
(Xubuntu has customised XFCE to look quite different from the default version,
what were your reasons for this?)
L'interfaccia utente di Gnome sembrava intuitiva, e (le persone di Gnome) hanno
raggiunto questo aspetto dopo aver fatto un sacco di pensate, per questo motivo
emularlo mi sembrava avesse senso. Abbiamo tentato di rendere Xubuntu il più
facile possibile da usare per i neofiti del computer in genere o di quelli di
sistemi non-Windows. Le persone che hanno esperienza su Xfce possono comunque
personalizzarsi Xubuntu.
(The Gnome UI used in Ubuntu seemed intuitive and they had reached that look
after giving it a lot of thought, so emulating that when possible made sense to
me. We try to make Xubuntu as easy to use as possible by default for people new
to computers or non-Windows systems. Experienced Xfce users can and do
customize it anyway.)
Ultimamente ci sono stati miglioramenti su Xfce, come per esempio Thunar, come
ti trovi a lavorare con il gruppo di sviluppo di Xfce?
(There have been recent improvements in XFCE such as Thunar, how have you found
working with the XFCE development team?)
E' stata una esperienza assortita. Tutte le comunicazioni sullo sviluppo Xfce
si sono svolte sulla mailing list di sviluppo, con poche eccezioni (mail
private). Ci sono state risposte sia amichevoli che quasi-ostili, come è
normale in tutte le comunità . Ho cercato di ignorare le lunghe disquisizioni
(non è stato facile) e i commenti negativi, specialmente dal momento che la
maggior parte di questi non avevano nessun contenuto tecnico, e sono originati
a causa di cattiva comunicazione ed equivoci. I problemi principali sono che
Xfce non ha una vera e propria pianificazione e per quanto ne so, i 5, o poco
più, sviluppatori principali, lavorano su Xfce nel loro tempo libero. Così,
basare Xubuntu sulla loro versione di sviluppo permettere di raggiungere la
quantità di prove necessarie per portare a qualche miglioramento sul codice
base, ma ha anche probabilmente causato un po' più di stress del solito sugli
sviluppatori. Ma dopotutto è stata una bella esperienza per me.
(It was a mixed experience. All communication happened on the Xfce development
mainling list with a few exceptions (private mails). There were both very
friendly and semi-hostile answers, as it's usual with all communities. I try to
ignore rants (not easy) and negative comments, especially since most of the
time these have no technical content at all, and are sparked by
miscommunication or misunderstandings. The main issues are that Xfce doesn't
really have a schedule and AFAIK all of the 5 or so core developers are doing
this in their free time. So while basing Xubuntu on their development version
may have raised the amount of testing they received and lead to some
improvements in the codebase it also possibly caused a bit more stress to the
devs than usual. But all in all it was a nice experience for me.)

stimarlo, ma sono sicuro che la base di utilizzatori di Xubuntu sia ancora
molto più piccola di Ubuntu e Kubuntu.
(I don't yet see a need for such formal structure. I have no good way of
estimating it but I am sure the Xubuntu user base is still far smaller than
that of Ubuntu and Kubuntu.)
Qual è il pubblico più importante per Xubuntu? E' principalmente per computer
vecchi o lenti? Quali funzioni potrebbero attirare gli attuali utilizzatori di
Gnome e KDE?
(Who is the target audience for Xubuntu? Is it mainly for people with older or
slower machines also what features do you think might appeal to current Gnome
and KDE users?)
(Xubuntu) Inizialmente è stata pensata come una distribuzione pulita e
mantenibile per computer con poca memoria. Comunque si è dimostrata essere
ottima anche per i â??thin clientâ?? (computer recenti ma con poche risorse
hardware ndt). Gli attuali utilizzatori esperti di Gnome e KDE potrebbero
trovare attraente la relativa velocità e la semplicità , ma è principalmente
una questione di gusti. Il principale obiettivo sono ancora quei computer su
cui Gnome e KDE non girano accettabilmente bene.
(Initially it was meant as a clean and maintainable distro for machines with
less memory. However it turned out to be a very good fit for thin client
deployments as well. Existing experienced Gnome and KDE users may find its
relative speed and simplicity appealing, but this is a matter of taste mostly.
The main target are still those machines where KDE and Gnome do not run
acceptably well.)
Su cosa hai lavorato per Dapper?

Ho realizzato i pacchetti per i rilasci principali e istantanee di
sotto-versioni per tenere insieme l'ultima versione del codice, dal momento che
Xfce 4.4 non è ancora stato rilasciato. Ho inviato feedback (dei test
effettuati ndt), segnalazioni di bug, e correzioni al filone principale Xfce
man mano che si evidenziavano i problemi durante il processo. Ho fatto qualche
modifica ai pacchetti Ubuntu per farli funzionare senza le librerie Gnome, in
quanto una delle linee guida per Xubuntu era usare solo le applicazioni GTK. Ho
tenuto i contatti e coordinato varie persone che hanno aiutato Xubuntu â?? la
comunità e gli sviluppatori Canonical, gli artisti, quelli che hanno redatto
la documentazione, gli utilizzatori alle prime armi.
(Packaged Xfce upstream releases and subversion snapshots to keep up with their
latest code, as Xfce 4.4 is not yet released. Sent feedback, bug reports and
patches to upstream Xfce as problems were encountered in the process. Made
changes to a few Ubuntu packages to get them work without Gnome libraries as
using only GTK apps was one of the guidelines for Xubuntu. Kept in touch and
coordinated with various people who helped Xubuntu â?? community and Canonical
developers, artists, documentation writers, early users.)

Sto correggendo i problemi importanti che incontrano gli utilizzatori Dapper.
Impostare una stampante è uno dei problemi, anche se non è il maggiore;
confidiamo di riuscire a riusare molta parte di quanto Ubuntu sta facendo in
questo campo. Un altro obiettivo è quello di riutilizzate quante più
applicazioni per il desktop di Ubuntu senza penalizzare le prestazioni. Quindi
di rendere Xubuntu accessibile agli utilizzatori disabili, così come Gnome e
KDE già lo sono in qualche parte. Altri miglioramenti dipendono da quanto sta
facendo il filone principale Xfec/Thunar in questo periodo. Tutti questi piani

(Fixing the important issues Dapper users encounter. Setting up a printer is
one such problem if not the biggest; we'll hopefully be able to reuse much of
what Ubuntu is doing in this area. Another goal is reusing as many as possible
of the Ubuntu desktop apps without getting performance penalties. Then making
Xubuntu accessible to users with disabilities, just as Gnome and KDE already
are to some extent. Other improvements depend on what upstream Xfce/Thunar is

Quale funzionalità ti piacerebbe vedere oppure migliorare in Ubuntu?

Per quel che vedo, Ubuntu sta offrendo un po' tutto quello che permette
l'attuale stato del software libero. Così mi piacerebbe vedere miglioramenti
in un quadro più ampio, di cui beneficerebbe non solo Ubuntu. Il più grande
desiderio (scontato per tanti) è avere un vero decente OOo oppure
un'alternativa. A causa dei problemi di prestazioni e compatibilità , la sua
diffusione è ristretta a organizzazioni dove il prezzo dei benefici dalle
licenze ha più peso dei costi che devono essere affrontati per nuovo hardware,
oppure in posti dove è imposto dai governi, oppure tra i sostenitori del
FLOSS. Ma davvero pochi (non ne conosco nessuno) lo scelgono perché è davvero
di qualità migliore rispetto all'offerta MS.
(From what I see Ubuntu is offering pretty much all that the current state of
free software allows. So I'd like to see improvements in the larger picture
which would benefit not only Ubuntu. The main wish is (unsurprisingly to many)
getting a really decent OOo or an alternative. Because of performance and
compatibility issues, its deployment is restricted to organizations where the
cost benefits from the licensing outweigh the costs that have to be spent on
new hardware, or to places where it is mandated by governments, or to FLOSS
fans. But very few users (I know none) choose it because it is really better
quality than the MS offering.)
Contribuisci al FLOSS in qualche altra maniera?

Ho cominciato a contribuire al FLOSS circa 5 anni fa, mandando qualche piccola
correzione alla lkml (linux kernel mailing list ndt) e un paio di segnalazioni
a asmutilis. Da allora ho fatto qualche correzione occasionale per vari
progetti con cui sono stato in contatto, il più significativo è stato il
progetto eCos - un RTOS (Real Time Operating System â?? sistema operativo real
time, sistema operativo â??embeddedâ?? per dispositivi ndt) molto bello,
piccolo e a basso impatto - che ho usato nell'ultimo impego. Ho scritto, ma non
lo mantengo più, il driver framebuffer trident nel kernel linux. Come
attività educative sono un po' coinvolto in un gruppo di software libero
avviato recentemente dagli studenti di due università di Cluj con l'obiettivo
di attirare altri studenti, ed eventualmente insegnanti, e far conoscere meglio
con il software libero. Le scuole superiori e le università sono ancora molto
legate a Windows, e come conseguenza il movimento FLOSS è significativamente
meno maturo in Romania che negli altri paesi del centro ed est Europa.
(I first started contributing to FLOSS about 5 years ago sending a few small
doc patches to lkml and a couple entries to asmutils. Since then I did
occasional patches to various projects I have got in touch with, the most
significant being the eCos project (a very nice, free, low footprint RTOS)
which I had used at work at my last employer. I wrote, but no longer maintain,
the trident framebuffer driver in the linux kernel. As for education activities
I am slightly involved in a free software group initiated recently by students
at two universities in Cluj with the goal of getting other students and
eventually teachers better acquainted with free software. High-schools and
universities are still very much Windows centered and as a consequence the
FLOSS movement is significantly less mature in Romania than in other Central
and Eastern European countries.)

Ho cominciato usando Xfce quasi due anni fa. Non c'è niente in particolare per
cui mi piace, a parte il fatto che è leggero e facile da usare. Da quando uso
Ubuntu, ho anche cominciato ad usare Gnome qualche volta, ed è molto meglio di
quel che era 3-4 anni fa.
(I started using Xfce almost two years ago. There's nothing in particular that
I like about it besides that it is light and friendly. Since using Ubuntu I
have also started Gnome occasionally and it is a lot better than it was 3-4
years ago. )

Un portatile con 64 Mb che non uso più a parte per provare Xubuntu si chiama
piglet e un portatile di prova di Canonical che uso per tutto il mio lavoro,
chiamato cavia.
(One 64Mb laptop which I no longer use besides testing Xubuntu on it called
piglet, and a test-laptop from Canonical which I use for all my work called
cavia.)
Com'è il tuo deskptop?
(What does your desktop look like?)
Il desktop Xubuntu 6.06 standard, totalmente ricoperto per la maggior parte del
tempo dal terminale oppure firefox. Nessuno sfondo ricercato o
personalizzazioni.
(Default Xubuntu 6.06 desktop, totally covered most of the time by the terminal
or firefox. No fancy wallpapers or customized looks.)
Com'è il tuo angolo computer?

Immaginate un muro verde e lì vicino una scrivania troppo piccola per essere
incasinata per cui non ci stà molto sopra a parte il portatile. Di
conseguenza, le macerie che uso quotidianamente sono sul pavimento, ma vicine
alla scrivania.
(Imagine a green wall and near it a desk too small to be a mess since not much
besides the laptop fits on it. Consequently the debris I use daily is on the
floor but close to the desk.)

Acqua, quando mi ricordo che dovrei bere, dal momento che non ho sete molto

mia lingua madre), a 45 km da dove vivo adesso.

Che ricordi hai della tua infanzia?

Niente di personale di cui valga la pena parlare e che possa essere descritto
in poche righe senza andare fuori tema. Dal lato tecnico, mi ricordo quando
avevo 14 anni e vidi poche linee di BASIC, che contenevano PLOT e DRAW, scritte
su un pezzo di carta, e rimasi affascinato dal fatto che quelle linee di codice
potevano far fare un triangolo ad un computer.
(Nothing personal which is worth mentioning and that can be described in a few
lines without being out of context. On the technical front, I remember being 14
and seeing a few lines of BASIC consisting of PLOT and DRAW written down on a
piece of paper and being fascinated by the fact that those can make a computer
draw a triangle.)

Dipende da cosa gli piace vedere in un nuovo paese :) Ci sono belle montagne,

E' una questione di gente preferita piuttosto che posti preferiti. Mi piaceva
andare a sciare in inverno e il campeggio oppure escursioni in estate con i
miei migliori amici durante l'università , ma da allora la maggior parte di
essi vive all'estero, e adesso lo facciamo meno spesso.
(It's about favourite people rather than places. I enjoyed going skiing in the
winter and camping or hiking in the summer with my close friends during
university, but since most of them live in other countries now, we do it way
less often.)

Ero molto appassionato di computer, ma da quando ho preso confidenza con il
software libero 7 anni fa, questo sentimento gradualmente è mutato in passione
per la libertà . Ma alimento ancora questa passione solo con lavori relativi ai
computer.
(I used to be very passionate about computers, but since I got acquainted with
free software 7 years ago this gradually morphed into passion for freedom. But
