I went back and reread your message.  At first, you state that you use a string 
to configure that includes a /Users/evilrich directory, then you contradict 
yourself.

Nonetheless - Whenever I encounter this sort of 'useless, generic, incorrect' 
gcc error message, I tend to find some include is missing.  Which leads me to 
think it's also a Xcode install problem - it may have forgotten to install 
something, because it thought it was there and didn't check.
