Dear ALL,

We are happy to invite you to the talk of our next Subterranean guest speaker,
Professor Tamar Mayer:

Nationalism, Feminism, and Masculinity in the Jewish State.

Please note the date:
Monday November 12
2 - 4 p.m.
Sidney Smith - Room 2125

As usual refreshments and munchies will be provided.

Professor Mayer will speak on political boundaries, nationalism and masculinity
in Jewish Israel. She will examine the interplay between nation, gender, and
sexuality and the complex ways in which they pressure people to negotiate their
identities. She will also discuss the monumental historical juncture at which
are the state of Israel and the Palestinian nation. Both have a chance to claim
a new future but more than a quarter of a century of occupation has had
significant social, political, economic, cultural, psychological and moral
ramifications for Israeli and Palestinian men and women.

Tamar Mayer is Professor and Chair of the Geography Department at Middlebury
College, Vermont. Her research focuses on the construction of national
identity, with a particular focus on Jewish and Palestinian nationalisms and
gender. Her recent publications on these topics include Gender Ironies of
Nationalism: Sexing the Nation (Routledge, 2000. Edited volume) and Women and
the Israeli Occupation: The Politics of Change (Routledge, 1994. Edited Volume).

Thanks for taking the time to read this long message.
See you all there!

Luisa
