Eco-cities, Green Communities and Environmental Governance in China
Presentation by Professor Boland

In recent years there has been increasing emphasis on environmental sustainability as a key component of development strategies in Chinese cities. Illustrative of this trend is the introduction of government initiatives for the designation of "eco-cities" and "green communities". While operating at varied scales from the metropolitan region to the residential district these initiatives share in common a logic of competition as a driving mechanism for change. This talk will present some of Professor Boland's current research on the regulatory aspects of these policy programs, their effects on the ground, and what they reveal about the new environmental calculus of urban development in China.
